January 29

It's become a tradition. When Sooz and I have birthdays, we take a day off from work to play at Clayworks. Today it was my birthday. The "anniversary of my entrance to this earthly plane" as my wise sister, Cinder, calls it. So here's what went down.

After arriving at Clayworks, I threw 4 cylinders for coffee mugs. In just a little over an hour. Now, please understand that this is a record for me. It's not that I've gotten good; it's more that I knew what I wanted to do (catch up on suggested class "assignments") and that I'm enjoying a much more relaxed, laissez-faire mindset for throwing. It's about the process now, as opposed to the final result. Perfection isn't the goal. Wow! That's liberating.

On Thursday, I'll pull handles for these...off the mug as Ron has shown us. It's a very different process from making the handle separately. But it does seem to result in a much more organic form. It's harder for me because it's new. But I welcome the challenge.

My shelf is waaay too full so I took a break to glaze a few pieces. Then Sooz and I went for lunch. A surprise side trip was involved. Cinder --- who lives in Columbia --- was in cahoots with Sooz to help get me my b-day present. I thought we were going to the Home Economist to get lunch (which we did.) But we took a little detour to Carolina Clay Connection where there was a gift certificate waiting for me!!! (THANK YOU SIS!!!!) I stocked up on some new tools and a great book! Sooz gave me wine and flowers. More wine came from Elaine. I set the stash up at the studio to snap this.

Seeing Elaine was a nice gift. Sooz & I helped unload her glaze kiln. How wonderful it was, seeing her first Day of the Dead wall masks emerge! Breathtaking. Powerful!

Later I would throw a bowl...not a very good one. And in class I managed to throw a cylinder tall enough to be a pitcher. It's the tallest form I've thrown to date. Too heavy at the bottom...not yet uniform on the sides. These things will come with time.

I've got time (I hope) for many more birthdays. And I'm sure that many more traditions have yet to be born. But Birthdays at Clayworks are very special...clay-spattered as they are! :>

Lovely blog Becky. I see that cats are a theme. As I say, I love the way cats are put together but a dog can tell you when to chamber a round. Good looking loader you have. You have to go after the raku it`s fun. Thanks for the link in advance. You`ll be in my menu also.

Thanks for the kind words, John :) Yes, Spanky is one heck of a loader. But his only aim is affection. And in that, he is dead on. I shall go after the raku. I'm already seeing possibilities. No need to put me in your menu. I'm not exactly an artist yet. Maybe one day. :)
