Wedding gifts

A kindly kiln god must have been watching over the gas kiln. I had 5 pieces in the most recent firing - all intended for Fred's niece, Amy. She's getting married August 31st and had asked if I'd be willing to make candlesticks for the ceremony, as well as a chalice and a small plate for communion. I'd never made candlesticks before so I spent almost all of my time in Ron's class trying to throw a decent pair.

After testing various glazes on 6 other candlesticks, I settled on a combination of sunshine yellow and spotted shino with yanagahara accents. The chalice and plate were sunshine yellow only. Boy oh boy, was I relieved that everything came out okay. No glaze spilled on to the kiln shelves...no nearby vases exploded, embedding shards in my pieces. All five came out without mishap.

Now all I have to do is hope there's a shipping god out there...so everything makes it safely to TN.

Gorgeous!
Everything looks wonderful. Your sunshine yellow came out especially nice. How did you get the pattern on the plate?

Well done! I am glad it was a good firing. You did a fantastic job on those pots.

Guys, thanks for the kind words. They're much appreciated!

John, the pattern on the plate was done with a brush atop the initial glaze. What was interesting is all the pieces were the same clay body and the same glaze. But the chalice & plate must have been in a different area of the kiln.

Doug, as you might guess "fab" is one of my fave words. Still a long way to go as far as form on candlestickities (a certain wood worker's word) but I definitely enjoyed the process.

Ron, I promise that, come fall, I'll concentrate on what you're teaching (unless you're teaching candlesticks & then I might try to improve my faceting.) Thanks for the help you gave me!

Jen, thanks so much! If it hadn't of been for your suggestion I don't know if I would have tried barrel firing. Now I'm hooked. Next time I'm going to try a few new things. Hope you had a good day in Columbia?
