Food for Thought

Last January, Fred and I made a decision that “changed our lives forever.” (Don’t you just despise that over-used, advertising phrase? I do too, but I’m too lazy today to try to come up with something better.) Cliches aside, we decided to try an organic diet. Sounds like a simple enough change, right? In many ways it is, but there are some differences that fairly smack you in the face – like walking down the aisles of a grocery store, surrounded by the foods you’ve eaten for years and realizing that about 99% of them are not your friend.

Also, organic foods are more expensive. Initially, it was a real tug-o-war in the produce section. Why buy a smaller, organically grown red pepper for 3.99 when you can hit the jackpot with 2 shiny, plump, HUGE red peppers for 5.00? But after tasting the difference, I easily jumped that hurdle. And after reading about the differences in organic farming vs non-organic farming, I never looked back at those 2 for $5 red peppers again. Or potatoes or tomatoes or lettuce or squash, etc. The extra expense is well worth the extra taste and, more importantly, the added health benefits.

It wasn’t just vegetables; our diet underwent a complete overhaul. But it was the produce department that ultimately led us to the next logical step in our search for better organic food. We went LOCAL! Through the Local Harvest website, we read up on CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) subscriptions, and were delighted to find there were several CSA farms in our area...some were even organic! One in particular caught my eye – New Moon Farm. Vist New Moon Farm

We are now subscribers, and recently picked up our first weekly share of fresh, (hand-picked the day before!)local, organic produce. We’re smitten! And so is Mira, our feline refugee from the Winn Dixie parking lot.

Not only is the food delicious, but Suzanne (aka the farmers wife) is a whirlwind of positive energy, a delightful conversationalist and another Keeper of the Blog. For a great read about life on an organic farm, have a look.

The more I learn about the organic lifestyle, the more appealing it all becomes. Whether it’s enjoying organic food or creating pots from clay, connecting with Nature -- studying it, working with it and not against it -- it’s all a part of a much bigger picture that’s revealing itself to me.

I’m loving the view.
